In 1934 the Sofia metropolitan Stefan gave it to the Russian community because of a change in the statute of the previous ambassadorial Russian church “St. Nikolay the  Miracle-Worker”.

During the bombardments in March 1944 the church was completely destroyed. Only the icon of St. Nikolay above the door survived, and has since been considered as a
miracle-making icon.
